Südkorea: Pingpong mit Kandidaten

In Südkorea findet am 3. Juni 2025 eine vorgezogene Präsidentschaftswahl statt, nachdem Ex-Präsident Yoon Suk-yeol wegen eines versuchten Staatsstreichs vom Verfassungsgericht abgesetzt wurde. Der Kandidat der Demokratischen Partei, Lee Jae-myung, liegt in den Umfragen vorn, muss sich jedoch erneut vor Gericht verantworten, da ein früherer Freispruch aufgehoben wurde. Eine Verurteilung könnte ihn nach der Wahl sein Amt kosten. Sein Herausforderer Kim Moon-soo von der konservativen People Power Party tritt nach parteiinternen Streitigkeiten an und wird für seine Nähe zum früheren Präsidenten Yoon kritisiert. Beide Lager kämpfen mit internen Problemen, während das Land nach politischer Stabilität sucht.

7 candidates, 1 winner: Presidential hopefuls vie for top job as race kicks off

Seven candidates are officially running in South Korea’s presidential election on June 3, 2025, with Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party and Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party seen as the main contenders. Other candidates include Lee Jun-seok (Reform Party), Kwon Young-gook (Korean Democratic Labor Party), Koo Joo-wa (Liberty Unification Party), and independents Song Jin-ho and Hwang Kyo-ahn. All candidates had to meet eligibility requirements, including being at least 40 years old, residing in Korea for at least five years, and submitting a 300 million won deposit. The National Election Commission also disclosed each candidate’s assets, tax records, military service history, and any criminal background. With the race officially underway, Lee Jae-myung currently leads in the polls.
