Ex-President Yoon announces departure from PPP, urges support for party candidate Kim

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced his departure from the conservative People Power Party (PPP) on May 17, 2025, while urging the public to support the party’s presidential candidate, Kim Moon-soo. In a Facebook post, Yoon stated that although he is leaving the party, he will continue to stand for freedom and national sovereignty. His exit comes amid growing pressure within the PPP, as many members believed his association was damaging Kim’s polling numbers—especially after Yoon was impeached in April over his failed martial law attempt and is now on trial. While PPP leadership welcomed his departure, opposition figures and rival candidates sharply criticized Yoon’s statement for lacking any sense of remorse. Reform Party candidate Lee Jun-seok called Yoon’s message delusional and offensive, highlighting the chaos he caused with his claims of election fraud.
